Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fatty deposits from the upper and/or lower eyelids. At Enhancements Facial Plastic Surgery in Bethlehem Township, PA, Dr. Scott Sackman performs eyelid surgery to refresh tired-looking eyes and, in some cases, restore peripheral vision blocked by sagging upper lids.

Upper blepharoplasty addresses heavy, hooded upper eyelids that make patients look tired or older than they feel. The procedure removes a small strip of excess skin (and sometimes a small amount of fat) through an incision hidden in the natural crease of the eyelid, leaving a virtually invisible scar.

Lower blepharoplasty addresses under-eye bags and dark circles caused by herniated fat pads. Depending on the patient's anatomy, the incision may be hidden inside the lower lid (transconjunctival approach, no visible scar) or just beneath the lash line.

Many patients combine eyelid surgery with a brow lift or facelift for a more comprehensive rejuvenation, since heavy upper lids are sometimes caused or worsened by a sagging brow. Dr. Sackman will evaluate the entire upper face during consultation to recommend the right combination.

The procedure is performed in our accredited in-office surgical suite. Recovery includes mild bruising and swelling that resolves within 7 to 14 days, with most patients returning to work in about a week.
