Liposuction for the Neck and Face
by Dr. Scott Sackman, Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon
Liposuction of the neck and face is one of my favorite procedures. Healing time is brief, lasting generally no more than 7-10 days. Other than some swelling around the operative site, there are few telltale signs that surgery was even performed. Incisions are small, and there is usually only minimal discoloration. "Down-time" after surgery ranges from 12 to 48 hours.
Liposuction can be used to sculpt and refine several areas about the face and neck. The "double chin" refinement is the most common procedure for both men and women. Corrections for jowl formations and sculpturing for cheek contouring are also frequently performed, either as individual procedures, or as part of a facelift or necklift.
Liposuction is performed in my office under local anesthesia. Occasionally a mild sedative is administered preoperatively. Surgery generally lasts about one hour. An elastic bandage wrapping is worn home, and worn each night while sleeping for several days. Few patients require daytime bandages after the first day.
Final results from liposuction surgery are not present for a few weeks. Swelling must first subside, and then remodeling of the tissues beneath the skin must occur. Results develop gradually, so they're less immediately obvious than the results of more complex procedures such as rhinoplasty or facelift. Many patients prefer the more gradual changes.
